Questions that come up most

It won't open my file

Norah Studio opens audio files up to ten minutes long, in mono or stereo, in any format macOS, iOS or iPadOS reads: MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and others. A longer file, a video file, or a file another app is still writing will be refused. On an iPhone or iPad, tap Open audio and pick the song in Files, drag it in from another app, or share it to Norah Studio from another app. If a file you think should work is turned away, send it over and it will be looked at.

It won't install, or it won't open

Norah Studio needs macOS 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon — an M1 or newer. It does not run on Intel Macs, and the App Store will not offer it to one. On an iPhone it needs iOS 26 or later, and on an iPad iPadOS 26 or later; it runs on any iPhone or iPad that can install it.

Separation is taking a long time

Everything runs on your own device, so the time depends on the device rather than on a server. A three-minute song takes a few seconds on a recent Mac, iPhone or iPad. The first stems appear almost immediately and you can start listening while the rest fills in — you do not have to wait for the whole song. On an iPhone or iPad, a separation carries on in the background while the song is playing; if you pause it and leave the app, the separation waits and carries on when you come back.

Where are my songs and my separated tracks?

Every song you open becomes a project on the home screen, with your pitch, tempo, loop, mix and effect settings, and reopens where you left it. A project keeps a reference to your song's file, not a copy, so if you move or delete that file the project can no longer open it. The separated tracks themselves are working files, not a library: on a Mac they are cleared when you quit, and reopening a project separates the song again; on an iPhone or iPad the most recent songs' tracks are kept for a while, so reopening one is instant. Either way, reopening a song you have already separated does not cost another free song. To keep a track, export it. On a Mac, drag it out of the window, or click the export button on the lane, and choose where to save it. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the export button and choose a place in Files, or drag a track into another app.

I paid, and it is still asking me to pay

Open the purchase screen and press Restore purchases. This asks Apple what your account owns and unlocks the app again — it is what you need after reinstalling, or on a second device. A purchase made on a Mac also unlocks the iPhone and the iPad, and the other way round. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account that made the purchase.

How do I cancel the monthly subscription?

On a Mac, in the App Store: click your name, then Account Settings › Subscriptions. On an iPhone or iPad, in Settings: tap your name, then Subscriptions. You can do it at any time — or open apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Cancelling stops future charges; it does not refund a period already paid for. The lifetime purchase is a single payment and never renews, so there is nothing to cancel.

What happens if I cancel, or my subscription lapses?

Norah Studio keeps working and goes back to the free tier. Nothing is deleted: the app, your exported files and everything on your device stay exactly as they were. You get back whatever part of the five free songs you had not used before subscribing — the songs you separated while Pro was active did not spend any of them, but the five do not start over. Subscribe again, or buy the lifetime version, and unlimited songs come back straight away.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us, because Apple takes the payment. Ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com. Write to us as well if something did not work — that is how it gets fixed.

The key, the tempo or the sections look wrong

They are estimates, and the app labels them as such. The tempo and the bar grid are usually right on music with a steady pulse and can drift on rubato, live recordings or tracks that change tempo. The key is a best guess from the notes present, and a song can genuinely sit between two keys. The sections mark where the music repeats; they are not named parts of a song.

A stem has bits of another instrument in it

Separation is never perfect, in any tool. Dense mixes, heavy effects and instruments that share a range bleed into each other. If a particular song comes out badly, tell us which one and what you were expecting.

Your music stays on your device

On a Mac, Norah Studio has no network access at all — not blocked by a setting, but not granted in the first place, so it cannot upload anything even if it wanted to. On an iPhone or iPad it makes no network connections of its own either. Your songs are never sent anywhere and nothing is collected about you. The Privacy Policy says the same thing at greater length.
