The song,
with a space for you.
A backing track is a song with one part missing: the part you play or sing. Karaoke is the best-known kind, the record without its singer.

Kinds
Karaoke, minus-one,
play-along.
Karaoke takes out the vocals. A minus-one takes out any single part: the bass for a bassist, the drums for a drummer. Some play-alongs keep a quiet guide of the missing part.
All three start from the same thing: the song with its parts apart.

Making your own.

Separate it.
Leave out your part.
With the parts separated, a backing track is one muted lane. Lower the lane's gain instead of muting it and you have a play-along with a guide.
Move the key into your range and the tempo to your speed. Then export the lanes you keep: they leave at that tempo and in that key.

Within the instrumental.

Three lanes.
Some parts share one.
Norah Studio separates vocals, drums and instrumental. Bass, guitars and keys share the instrumental lane, so a backing track can leave out the voice or the drums, not one instrument from the rest.
