Small pieces.
Many times.

Most hard passages are hard for a few bars, not for the whole song. Loop those bars, slow them down, and raise the tempo a little each time they come round clean.

Length

Two or four bars.
Then join them.

Start with the shortest loop that holds the difficulty: often two or four bars. Once it is easy, double the loop so the passage joins what comes before and after.

Start the loop a little before the hard bar, too. Coming into it is often harder than playing it.

Tempo

Clean at a slow tempo.
Then a step up.

Play the loop slowly enough to play it right. Each time it comes round clean, raise the tempo a little. If it falls apart, step back down.

Slow a recording the old way and the pitch drops with it, and you practise in the wrong key.

With the band

Mute your part.
Fill the gap.

Practising against the record teaches timing in a way a metronome cannot. Sing or drum? Mute your lane and the band leaves room for you.

In Norah Studio, loop points snap to the bars, the loop doubles or halves, and tempo and key move separately, so the whole routine fits on one screen.
